Dave Whelihan of Whelihan Team Realty in Jupiter recently received the Golden R award from the Jupiter-Tequesta-Hobe Sound Association of Realtors for surpassing $5,000 in voluntary contributions to RPAC, the Realtors Political Action Committee. RPAC is the No. 1 trade association political action committee in the country, having donated more than $12 million to U.S. congressional candidates this year. In Florida, 94 percent of RPAC-endorsed candidates won state seats this month, according to John Rothell, director of political operations at the Florida Association of Realtors.
"The Golden R is a very distinguished achievement because it means that Dave has given RPAC a significant amount of money," says Patricia Fitzgerald of Coastal Properties in Jupiter. "RPAC is extremely effective in dealing with grassroots issues that affect all of our citizens."
Those issues include mortgage interest tax deductions, private property rights and homeowner insurance legislation.
"I believe RPAC is one of my best investments," says Whelihan, who joined the National Association of Realtors in 1987 and has contributed to RPAC for more than 20 years. "The candidates we help elect make crucial decisions that affect our ability to help clients buy and sell property."
The Jupiter Shores resident was the only recipient of the Golden R honor among 1,900 members of the Jupiter-Tequesta-Hobe Sound group. President Jerry Mitchell presented the award to Whelihan at a luncheon at PGA National Resort and Spa in Palm Beach Gardens.
RPAC has been the voice of Realtors on Capitol Hill since 1969. Today, the National Association of Realtors has more than 1.2 million members.
